Wine makers and producers had reason to be proud this past Friday when Wellington concluded their third Quest for the Best - the internal wine competition for Wellington by Wellington with the overall vision to improve the standard of Wellington wines from within.
The competition consisted of two tiers. On 2 August all the wine makers of the area were invited to taste the 80 wines entered. All wines that scored 16 and higher out of 20 were forwarded to the panel who tasted on the second day. Christine Rudman was at the helm and led Christian Eedes, Jaco Potgieter, Michael Duggan and Bennie Howard in tasting 60 wines to determine winners in the various classes.

The Best Overall Wine was the 2005 Welbedacht Barrel Fermented Chenin which also achieved the title Best Museum White. Other winners were: Best White Wine, Doolhof 2010 Cape Eagle, Best Value White, Napier Winery 2012 Lion Creek, Best Red Wine and Best Shiraz, Wellington Wines 2010 La Cave Shiraz, Best Value Red to Doolhof 2010 Cape Boar and Best Chenin Blanc to DGB 2012 Chenin Blanc.

Wellington also finally achieved District status and will be celebrating the launch of the independent District on 21 September at Kleinevalleij, an event which will coincide with 2012 Cape Wine and Vindaba.
