Sweet success - more praise and accolades for Boplaas Muscadel
17 August 2012  by Boplaas Family Vineyards
The Klein Karoo and Calitzdorp in particular - apart from its outstanding table wines and Cape fortifieds - has always prided itself on the outstanding quality of its Muscats and the Boplaas Muscadel 2011 proves this with another accolade, a gold at the Novare Terroir Awards 2012.
The Boplaas Muscadel 2011 - crafted from a block of Muscat de Frontignan planted in 1976 - has continued its run of success by winning a gold at the Novare Terroir Awards 2012. This was the first time that wines from Calitzdorp district in the Klein Karoo were allowed to enter the Terroir Awards and this marvellous Muscat took top honours. The same wine also won gold at the SA Muscadel Association and Enartis Muscadel Awards 2012 - it was the only Muscat from the Klein Karoo to win gold and one of only three White Muscadels to receive an award.

Originating from a vineyard planted back in 1976 by Oupa Danie Nel, these gnarled vines are carefully tended and deliver a meagre 6 ton/ha each vintage. However, these old vines are in perfect balance, produce fruit with greater concentration and in turn deliver wines with greater complexity and longevity. A traditional approach is taken in the crafting of these wines, with a period of skin contact in lagares with manual pigeage and spontaneous fermentation prior to fortification. The Boplaas Muscadel 2011 is characterised by a melange of citrus blossom, melon, honey, spice and unmistakable Muscat flavours all wrapped in a luscious palate with excellent alcohol integration and lilting acidity.

This fine Muscat is not simply a wine to be enjoyed with an array of decadent desserts or mature cheeses, but is a more than able accompaniment to spicy Indian cuisine, comforting Cantonese dishes, aromatic Thai dishes or traditional Cape fare such as bobotie, waterblommetjiebredie, springbok pie or perfectly braai’d “skilpadjies”. Boplaas Muscadel is best served chilled and can also be enjoyed over crushed ice or as mixer in various cocktails.

Continuing the stellar performance of Boplaas’s Muscats, the Boplaas Muscadel 2012 received a gold medal at the SA National Young Wine Show 2012, reaffirming all our efforts in the vineyard and cellar. Cathy Marston, Food24 wine writer and WSET course coordinator, included the Boplaas Muscadel 2012 in her pick of wines for this past long weekend and noted its complexity as well as outstanding value offered.

Our extensive range of table wines, Cape fortifieds, fine Potstill brandies and superb Muscats are available from our cellar door in Calitzdorp, the Cool Bay tasting room along the N2 and from most reputable retailers. However, a range of Reserve Muscats – including our old vine Hannepoot, Muscat and Red Muscat – and our 1975 Red Muscadel is only available from our cellar door in Calitzdorp.
