Delheim will roll out the barrels for vintage 2013 on the weekend of 26 and 27 January at the fourth Start of Harvest Festival, hosted by the Sperling family. Featuring once again is the famous grape stomp, where teams will clash in pursuit of producing the most juice, in a vat filled with freshly harvested grapes.

Guests will be welcomed from 12 noon with a glass of fermenting grape juice and a sweet mosbolletjie, a traditional harvest treat, and freshly harvested grapes will be set out for sampling.

Live jazz will feature from 12.30pm, and a cellar tour at 1pm will give a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a wine cellar in the midst of harvest. A picnic buffet lunch will offer the best of farm fresh fare, for enjoyment while lounging on the grass next to the river. A child minder will keep the young folk busy until 2pm, when the kiddies’ grape stomp will commence.

At 2.30pm the grape stomp-proper begins. Teams of 6-8 people will gather at the starting line for a barrel-rolling, grape-grabbing, chaotic stomping relay with onlookers shouting out ‘helpful’ hints. Prizes will be awarded for the most juice stomped and spot prizes allocated according to quirky themes.

Tickets will be restricted to 130 places, at R150 per adult and R100 per child. The entry fee includes live music, a keepsake tasting glass, a glass of grape must and traditional mosbolletjie, the cellar tour, grape tasting, buffet-style picnic lunch, supervised kids’ activities, wine grape stomping, a slice of chilled watermelon and a cup of filter coffee.

Bookings can be made at, or telephone 021 888 4607.

Let the ‘stompede’ begin!
