Cab Franc showcase dinner celebrates the varietal

Slowly but surely Cabernet Franc is gaining a cult following with wines from the Stellenbosch region leading the way.  Although often part of a Bordeaux style blend, the grape varietal is rarely used on its own, but this seems to be changing. Avontuur Estate in the Helderberg sub route, who produces a multi-award winning version of this grape variety, saw the opportunity during the 2013 Stellenbosch Wine Festival, to celebrate the varietal in the best way possible, paired with great food on Thursday, 31 January from 18h30!
Five other producers of top Cab Francs were invited to join the event and were keen to add their quality wines to the evening. They are Audacia, Knorhoek, Longridge, Lovane and Oldenburg Vineyards.

Chefs Zunia Boucher-Myers and Melanie Palteglou from the Avontuur Estate Restaurant,  with winemaker Jan van Rooyen and help from some of the participating wineries, came up with an exotic menu to pair with the 6 wines and we expect the Cab Franc "fan club" to be out in force on the night.

Diners will start off with a Chinese-themed Tiger Prawns dish paired with Audacia and Avontuur's wines, the main course of Fillet of Beef with pan-fried duck liver is paired with Lovane and Knorhoek's two wines and the dessert interestingly enough, is served with the Longridge and Oldenburg Vineyards. The dinner ends off with coffee and dark chocolate shots.

The wines will be for sale on the night in a special "Showcase 6-pack" or can be ordered from the various wineries for deliveries after the event.

The cost is R300 pp which includes the welcome drink, the menu, the wines as paired, coffee and the choccies. Excluded is a 10% service charge on the total bill as well as other beverages.

Only 30 diners can be accommodated and as we expect the evening to be popular, it is recommended that you book immediately at openhand@polka.co.za or +27.218554296. Bookings will be secured after a 50% deposit is paid.
