Steenberg supports Earth Hour with night picnic
- by -
Along with hundreds of millions of people around the world, Steenberg in the Constantia Valley will power down on Saturday 23 March in a show of support for Earth Hour, the largest environmental event in history.

More than 7 000 cities and towns in 152 countries and territories switched off their lights in 2012, and this year marks the continuation of the movement’s commitment to going Beyond the Hour, with more than 200 000 individuals accepting I Will If You Will challenges on YouTube to turn their symbolic action into an ongoing commitment to a sustainable future. With the power of social networks used to promote the campaign, Earth Hour is working towards an interconnected universal community dedicated to creating a more sustainable planet. It is organised by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), one of the largest and most respected independent conservation organisations in the world.

Guests may arrive at the Steenberg Winery from 18h00, and are invited to participate in this symbolic action to help save the planet, while enjoying a Night Picnic on the lawn in the spectacular setting of this historic farm, with communal fires and torches lighting up the lawn, and floating candles drifting through the reflection pools. Delicious picnic baskets are on offer by pre-order from winery restaurant Bistro Sixteen82, to enjoy under the nocturnal skies while sharing in the global ‘lights out’ campaign.

The switch will be flicked at exactly 20h30 to honour Earth Hour (20h30 to 21h30) and the distant silhouette of the Stone Mountain will provide a gentle reminder of the fragility of our natural environment.

Steenberg’s delectable Night Picnic baskets filled with tasty delicacies are available at R400 per couple, and include two glasses and a choice of a bottle of 1682 Chardonnay MCC, Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, or Klein Steenberg Cabernet Sauvignon. With mouth-watering treats such as Sixteen82 Pâté de Compagne (Coarse ground pork and duck pate) with home-baked Ciabatta and Focaccia or a choice of local artisan cheeses or cured meats, as well as Smoked Trout Terrine with crème fraiche and a mouth-watering Potato Salad garnished with aioli, spring onions, lardons, and pangritata, it is a royal spread.

Pre-booking of picnic baskets can be made on +27.217132211 or email

Bistro Sixteen82 will be open for Tapas as usual until 20h00, along with the tasting room at the Winery, also open until 20h00 for wine purchases.

Steenberg is a passionate supporter of this important annual world-wide venture. Marketing Manager Anetha Homan says: ‘We are delighted to take part in the symbolic switching off of the lights that sends a powerful message to take action. It’s all about turning the inspiration of one hour into the actions of every hour. We are firmly behind the call of going Beyond the Hour to commit to lasting action on climate change. We encourage all our friends, guests, colleagues and associates in the Constantia valley and beyond, to do the same.’
