Orange River Cellars is cooking! The Upington-based winery was recently
named official wine sponsor of the exciting new Afrikaans cooking show Kokkedoor, signifying a big breakthrough in the world of television for this Northern Cape wine producer. Kokkedoor will start broadcasting on Kyknet from Thursday, April 11th.
Kokkedoor is the first reality television cooking show in Afrikaans and will feature 20 contestants battling it out in the kitchen to establish who will be South Africa's first Kokkedoor, or bigwig chef. The eventual winners will receive a cash prize, as well as the opportunity to publish their own recipe book. The Kokkedoor judges will be food culture expert Hetta van Deventer Terblanche and the acclaimed Cape chef Nic van Wyk.
According to the marketing manager of Orange River Cellars, Koos Visser, not only is it a big honour for the cellar to be chosen as official Kokkedoor wine sponsor, but also a marketing boost for the greater Orange River wine region. "Apart from the massive excitement and anticipation surrounding Kokkekoor, the character of the show is also well suited to the image of Orange River Cellars' wines.
"The show was filmed in the uniquely regional and hospitable rural environment of Prince Albert, which exudes values and images that the Orange River community can identify with," according to Visser.
The show places a real emphasis on authentic home cooking and honest food made from fresh farm ingredients and recipes that pay homage to the rich culture of farm cooking. "The people of the Orange River wine region are well acquainted with this cooking and food philosophy which also forms an integral part of the region's hospitable and homely image, factors contributing to its popularity as a tourist destination," he says. "We also look forward to the many innovating twists the contestants will bring to popular recipes."
Orange River Cellars' wines will exclusively be used during the show by the judges and contestants for any occasion which requires a glass of wine, whether as an ingredient or to accompany the various dishes. There will also be giveaways of Orange River Cellars wine gift-packs for the duration of the broadcasts.
"We are especially pleased that the producers of Kokkedoor, Homebrew Films, acknowledge the importance of wine as an accompaniment to food and that Orange River Cellars can help to promote this lifestyle through its involvement in the show," says Visser. "It is important to show viewers that we have a South African wine culture which is closely intertwined with the country's food culture and that these two elements have been inseparable partners for centuries.
"It is a very big honour for Orange River Cellars to be a part of Kokkedoor considering the exceptional quality of the show and the national interest it is generating."
