According to Danie Cronjé, the director of Liquor Law Services at Cluver Markotter Inc. very few holders of liquor licenses are aware of the provision in the Western Cape Liquor Act which requires them to put a sign with information regarding their liquor licence on the front door/window of their premises.
In terms of the Regulations under the Act the licensee must ensure that the name of the premises, the type of licence issued, the trading hours and the licence number are displayed on the front door or window of the licensed premises in characters not less than 5cm in height.

In respect of the name of the premises the name as appears on the renewal notice e.g. Olyvenhout Wineshop should be used.

In respect of the type of licence “micro-manufacturer’s licence” should be used for wineries with such licenses and “on-consumption licence” for restaurants, clubs, pubs, hotels, function venues etc.

For supermarkets, liquor stores, wineshops etc. “off-consumption licence” should be used.

The trading hours are those in terms of the applicable municipal by-law or, where no by-law has been implemented for the municipal area, those in terms of the Western Cape Liquor Act.

For off-consumption  licenses the hours under the Western Cape Liquor Act are 09h00 – 18h00 Monday to Sunday.

For on-consumption licenses the hours under the Western Cape Liquor Act are 11h00 – 02h00 Monday to Sunday.

The licence number is the number beginning with WCP which appears on the renewal notice or the licence itself.
