Elgin became a prominent wine region around 2 years ago and consistently produces wines with elegance and finesse. Most have good minerality and can age well whilst offering a purity of fruit without jammy flavours. It is indeed the complete package. The Appellation Series, which features a crest honouring Jean le Long the first title holder of the Boschendal farm in 1685, consists of the Elgin Pinot Noir, Elgin Chardonnay and Elgin Sauvignon Blanc which winemaker Lizelle Gerber describes as fresh and elegant, with mineral undertones. The Appellation Series features Boschendal’s first stand-alone Pinot Noir. “Pinot Noir is a very difficult variety and we have been working on it since 2008. We have released this Pinot Noir because we are very happy with the quality, and it also fits perfectly into our new Elgin range of wines,” says Gerber.“The Pinot Noir will be produced in limited amounts, with a serious focus on quality.” The Appellation Series has already started garnering awards with the Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2012 awarded a Gold medal at the Michelangelo International Wine Awards of South Africa 2013. “Elgin could become known as the ‘best’ wine region in South Africa and recognised as such by international wine buyers,” says Jacques Roux, marketing director for DGB, the parent company of Boschendal Wines.
