The bylaw commenced on said date.
In terms of the bylaw premises with on-consumption liquor licences such as restaurants, clubs, pubs may sell liquor from 11h00 to 02h00 Monday to Saturday and from 11h00 to 23h00 on Sunday.
Hotels and casino’s may sell liquor 24 hours a day.
In terms of the bylaw bottle stores, supermarkets and wineshops may sell liquor from 09h00 to 18h00 Monday to Saturday and from 09h00 to 16h00 on Sunday.
Holders of special event liquor licences for concerts, festivals and sporting events will be permitted to sell liquor from 11h00 to 23h00 Monday to Thursday, 11h00 to 24h00 on Friday and Saturday and from 11h00 to 20h00 on Sunday.
According to Danie Cronje, the Director of Liquor Law Services at Cluver Markotter Incorporated supermarkets and liquor stores will welcome the opportunity to sell liquor on Sunday.
All licence holders will welcome the simplicity of the bylaw which does not prescribe different trading hours for areas with different zoning.
A number of other municipalities have followed the example of the City of Cape Town and introduced different trading hours premises with different zoning.
According to Cronje this confuses licence holders as well as officials from municipalities and SAPS who have to enforce the trading times.
