The 2014 Syrah du Monde awards were announced this week with Cederberg taking top honours with their Cape Winemakers Guild Teen die Hoog, and their 2011 Shiraz also in the top 10.

David Nieuwoudt is super excited about 2 of his wines attaining GOLD in the 2014 Shiraz du Monde competition, being the only South African Winery winning more than 1 gold medal.

The Cederberg Cape Winemakers Guild Teen die Hoog Shiraz 2011 was chosen out of all 405 wines entered to achieve the Top Spot - being placed first. The Cederberg Shiraz 2011 also won gold this year and was placed in the top 10 wines of the competition, and this of course is not surprising, as David has been producing wines of consistent top quality for many years.

With 405 wines from around the world entering this year, there were only 42 Gold and 94 Silver (total 136) awards allocated.  Of the 42 gold awards, 7 were South African and 2 were from the same producer - Cederberg Private Cellar - up in the mountains at serious altitude.

Not only has the Cederberg Shiraz 2011 been put in the Top 10 for the Syrah du Monde, but it was also recently awarded 5 Stars in the Australian WineState Challenge, and won gold at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles competition.

The following South African wines also achieved gold at the Syrah du Monde competition.

  • Fleur du Cap Shiraz 2012 (Stellenbosch)
  • Bon Courage Inkara Shiraz 2012 (Robertson)
  • Tamboerskloof Syrah 2010 from Kleinood (Stellenbosch)
  • Terra d'Aria SV Shiraz 2011 from D'Aria (Durbanville)
  • Number One - Constitution Road Shiraz 2011 from Robertson Winery

Australia equalled South Africa's achievements with 7 golds.

The eighth qualitative confrontation of the world's best Syrah/Shiraz wines was held on May 14-16, 2014 at the Château d'Ampuis in the village of Ampuis (northern Rhone Valley, France) and organised by Forum Oenologie.
