The Rhône-style blend
of Grenache, Carignan, Shiraz, Mourvèdre and Cinsaut, a gourmet wine from
Nederburg, reflects the uninhibited relish of cellar-master Razvan Macici in
working with these varietals.
It's as full character
but also finesse as Günter Brözel, the legendary former winemaker at Nederburg,
who is the inspiration for the title of Motorcycle Marvel. A great match
with earthy-flavoured, robust dishes, it brings out the flavours of seared
beef, spicy lamb or game casseroles.
Brözel, regarded as an
industry maven and a maverick, led the winemaking team at Nederburg from 1956
to 1989, and was known for his exceptionally high standards. The sound of his
250cc BSA motorcycle could strike fear in the hearts of his team. It was
warning that he was on his way to check that his exacting demands were being
met.
He was absolutely
meticulous and refused to countenance mediocrity in any of his team, winning
many awards and honours. One of the most significant was the
International Wine & Spirit Competition’s Robert Mondavi International
Winemaker of the Year Award in 1985. He was the first winemaker in South Africa
to achieve this distinction.
"He is an icon in
South African winemaking and has been an inspiration to me and our cellar
team,” says Macici, cellar-master since 2001.
