Jason’s Hill Private Cellar
Jason’s Hill Private Cellar has triumphed at the annual Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards, being awarded a Double Gold for the Jason’s Creek Classic 2012, and Gold for the Jason’s Hill Shiraz 2012. Silver was awarded to the Jason’s Hill Chardonnay 2011. The results were announced at an awards function held on 12 September.

The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards was established 18 years ago as the only international wine competition in Africa. The competition is unique in South Africa,as all judges are invited wine experts from Europe, the USA, Australia, the UK and Asia. Since the start of this competition, more than 160 different judges from 42 countries have served on the panels.

This accolade follows hot on the heels of the estate’s recent win at the inaugural Gold Awards where Gold medals were awarded to the 2014 Jason’s Hill Chenin Blanc, 2014 Jason’s Hill Sauvignon Blanc, 2011 Jason’s Hill Merlot, 2012 Jason’s Hill Shiraz, 2010 Jason’s Creek Classic Red and 2012 Jason’s Creek Classic Red.

The Gold Awards was born out of a need to help the consumer make educated buying decisions and to help worthy wines sell. With the vast amounts of wine available to the consumer on shelves, there is very little to guide them especially in the lower price categories.

Wines were judged by graduates from the Cape Wine Academy and the results were then statistically linked to the price of the wine to determine which wine was worth the value for money accreditation.

One of the stipulations for entries was that the wines had to be R70.00 including VAT or less, and easily accessible to the South African consumer at that price. The price limit will be adjusted every year to allow for inflation and the average increase in price. Only Gold medals were awarded.

Family owned cellar, Jason’s Hill Private Cellar is tucked away at the foot of the Slanghoek Mountains with fifth-generation award-winning winemaker Ivy du Toit keeping alive the tradition of vine growing and wine making in the Du Toit family.
