De Krans Wine Cellar
De Krans Wine Cellar in Calitzdorp performed very well at the 2014 Michelangelo International Wine Awards, receiving two Gold and two Silver medals. The results were announced at an awards function on Friday, 12 September.

De Krans Wine Cellar's The Last Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2010, which is currently available in the trade and off the farm received a gold medal at the competition. This special collectors port, which was the last port to be certified with the word Port on the label before the deadline of 31 December 2011, has already won gold medals at the 2013 Veritas Awards, 2010 SA Young Wine Show as well as receiving a 5-star rating in the Platter Guide in 2013.

Gold was also awarded to the Garden Route Shiraz 2012, which follows hot on the heels of the award for the Best Shiraz in the Klein Karoo for this wine at the 2014 SA Terroir Awards. This cool-climate red wine, produced from grapes coming from the Waboomskraal area displays an abundance of spicy, peppery and red fruit flavours.

This past weekend De Krans proved yet again why its ports are so popular and sought after at the 2014 Nederburg Auction. The highest price offered for a six-bottle case of De Krans Vintage Reserve Port 2002 was R3 800, with the average price R3 190 per six-bottle case. Just over R7 million worth of wines came under the hammer at this annual auction of rare aged South African wines. De Krans port wines have excellent ageing potential which is evident of the farm’s performance at the Nederburg Auction over the years. Last year a six-bottle case of the more matured De Krans Vintage Reserve Port 1993 was sold for R7000, reaffirming the port’s excellent investment potential.
