De Krans Wine Cellar, situated in Calitzdorp, has received a 5 star rating for its Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2012 in the latest edition of the authoritative and internationally recognized Platter’s by Diners Club South African Wine Guide 2015, due for release mid-November.

This is the 10th consecutive year that De Krans has been awarded a 5 star rating for its award-winning port wines, reaffirming their position as one of the port leaders in the industry. This port was also crowned SA Champion Port at the 2012 South African Young Wine Show. A total of 7 000 wines were judged by a panel of esteemed judges who selected 50 wines for the prestigious 5 star rating.

The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2012 is made from a blend of Touriga Nacional (87%) and Tinta Barocca (13%), both regarded as traditional port cultivars. This rich full-bodied port has excellent maturation potential, similar to the magnificent De Krans Vintage Reserve Port 1993, which was sold at last year’s Nederburg Auction for a record price of R7 000 for six bottles. Winemaker Louis van der Riet describes the 5 star Platter flagship port as having a vibrant plum colour, with dense aromas of prune, violets and spice. A fleshy, chewy mouthful of flavours, showing tannic grip, concentrated red fruit nuances, and a firm structure ensuring considerable longevity. Savour this premium port on its own, or serve with stronger cheeses. Available directly from the farm or through select retail outlets nationwide at R225 per bottle.

Other ports within the De Krans portfolio also did extremely well in the same guide with the De Krans Cape Tawny Ltd Release, Cape Vintage Port 2013 and White Muscadel Jerepigo 2013 each receiving 4½ stars. The De Krans Tritonia 2011, Touriga Nacional 2013, Espresso, Cape Ruby Port and Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2013 (also produced by De Krans) each received an impressive 4 stars.
