Wish you had your own barrel of wine? Well, for Albertus van Zyl it’s no longer a wish. Stellenbosch Vineyards announced last week that he won a barrel of Welmoed wine.
As part of the launch of Stellenbosch Vineyards’ new wine club, Club Sixteen90, it ran a competition from July to September 2014 where new wine club members stood the chance of winning this exclusive prize.

Albertus joined Club Sixteen90 at the end of September. He visited the winery on Thursday last week to select his favourite varietal to mature in the barrel. He said: “I am a fan of both Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It was difficult to choose between the Welmoed Sauvignon Blanc and Welmoed Cabernet Sauvignon. However, if you get the chance to mature your wine inside a barrel, you have to make the most of it, so I had to choose the Cabernet.”

Assistant winemaker Rudolph van Zyl gave Albertus a tour of the winery, and explained the process of maturing the wine for at least another six months. Based in Somerset West, Albertus said he’ll definitely bring his friends around to have a taste from his barrel of wine, while it’s in the cellar.
