Why Fat Bastard?
When
Thierry and Guy first created these delicious wines, they did it with gusto.
They poured their heats, souls and great dollops of generosity into every
bottle. In fact, it was a great big discovery (in winemaking terms) that led to
the name ‘Fat Bastard’. It comes from
having left the wines on the lees for a lot longer than usual, which allowed it
to develop more fully and completely, and when tasted, there was simply no
other way to describe it other than: “Well, now that’s a fat bastard!” This
tradition of creating full-bodied wines to be enjoyed with bellyfuls of laughs
and good-natured cheer continues today. Robertson Winery’s winemakers give
nothing short of their all when meticulously nurturing the Fat Bastards to
perfection. Whether it’s a celebration, a kuier or a ‘come on over!’, there’s a
Fat Bastard (or two) waiting to be opened.
FAT BASTARD MERLOT 2013
The Fat
Bastard Merlot was made from carefully selected grapes with the aim to produce
ripe-flavoured and silky textured wine. All fruit was de-stemmed, gently
pressed and whole berry fermented to retain fruit aromas and character. The
wine was aged in small oak barrels for 16 months, which added greater weight
and complexity. This wine has a deep ruby colour and ripe berry aromas leading
to a juicy palate of blackberries, plums and black cherries, with soft, rounded
tannins.
Suggested food
pairing: Roast lamb, oxtail or
lamb cutlets.
The Fat Bastard Merlot is available nationally and retails between R95 and R100.
FAT BASTARD PINOT NOIR ROSÉ
The Fat
Bastard Pinot Noir Rosé, made from carefully selected grapes grown in limestone
rich soils, were gently cold-pressed to extract the lovely salmon pink colour.
Enticing ripe sweet strawberry and watermelon aromas wrapped in floral
overtones follow onto a creamy palate filled with fresh summer berries, and ending
on a zippy note. This is wine to be enjoyed well chilled on any sunny day.
Suggested food
pairing: Seared salmon, beef carpaccio
or BBQ ribs.
The Fat Bastard Pinot Noir Rosé is available nationally and retails between R75 and R80. FAT BASTARD RANGE OF WINES
