5 of the best: Wineries open till late

There are times in the week when after work you just need a glass or 3 of wine but many wineries are already closed. Never fear! Here are 5 wineries that open later so you can get your vino on

Marianne

This winery in Stellenbosch is named after the French icon of freedom - and in their own words, "Marianne Wine Estate represents a 21st Century enterprise to produce French-style wines that honour both the South African terroir, and the 2000-year-old heritage of Bordeaux winemaking."

The entire estate has gone through some major changes in the last two years, giving way to a brand new tasting room that has a beautiful view over vineyards and citrus groves. With its industrial and rustic touches, the tasting room works really well for large groups but also has lovely seating on the deck for couples.

I'd recommend getting a biltong platter and watching the sun slip behind the Stellenbosch hills.

Opening times are Mon-Sun 9-7 and they are also open all year long - that's true dedication to the wine cause.

Peter Falke

You want a spot for sundowners? Look no further! It's an absolutely beautiful winery with its Cape Dutch exterior yet modern, sleek interior - it's a mix of the old and new and it's ridiculously stylish. Sitting outside in the garden is where you need to be; ample seating, lush green grass, lavender hedges and bright pink bougainvillea.

The wines are made in small quantities and they mostly focus on reds. They have two platter options ranging from a cheese platter which comes with preserves, charcuterie and seasonal fruits as well as fresh breads. Depending on the size, the costs are from R90 - R345. If you're off the dairy, consider the platter of Parma ham, melon and salad which is between R60 and R65

Tues - Sun 11-7pm

Stellenbosch Vineyards

It's a brand new tasting room and it almost looks like an elegant Waterfront hotel.

This is going to be a must-stop place in winter because they have gorgeous plush armchairs and a huge fire; their red wines are big and enveloping and the Credo Chenin Blanc is yummy.

Mon - Fri 9-6pm but the restaurant (Bistro13) is open for dinner so just take your bottle and pop next door.

De Grendel

If you live in the CBD then you should be gracing De Grendel with your presence every week because technically it's only a 20 minute journey and as soon as you drive through the gates, you feel as though you're hours away from the bustling city.

The view from the tasting room is spectacular and I don't think you can beat watching the sun cast hues of pink and orange around Table Mountain as it slides away into night.

Mon- Sat 9-7

(No 5 under construction due to a change in time)
