Earthbound Wines
All's fair in the vineyards and cellars of South Africa's Fairtrade wine producers, with Earthbound Wines - one of the SA’s favourite wine brands currently preparing to celebrate national FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2015, 30 March -12 April.. And there is much to celebrate, with South Africa ranked as the world's largest producer of Fairtrade wines.
During FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT 2015 South Africans will be asked to use their purchasing power to change the world; to seek justice with a chocolate bar, right wrongs with a glass of wine, change the world on their coffee break, or sweeten bitter trade on their way to the gym. The campaign’s theme, THE POWER OF YOU, aims to inspire the next generation of leaders and decision-makers to activate the immense power they have to change the world with their everyday choices.”

"With this campaign, we want to show South Africans that we can actually turn something as ordinary as buying a bottle of wine into something extraordinary. By choosing products that are ethically and sustainably sourced like Fairtrade wine, we have the power to give to farm workers’ children better opportunities in the Cape Winelands, to ensure decent working conditions, and to promote sustainable farming in South Africa. Doing all of this while rushing through the wine aisles of Pick n Pay is quite extraordinary if you ask me", say’s Arianna Baldo Executive Director of Fairtrade Label South Africa.

In 2013, two-thirds of the 20.8 million litres of Fairtrade wine sold worldwide were produced in South Africa and about 5% of the local wine grape production was Fairtrade certified. Since 2013, eight new Fairtrade wine producers have been certified.

The current 28 certified wine grape producers extend over 68 farms and employ over 2,500 farm workers. Counting their families and communities, Fairtrade estimates that the sale of South African Fairtrade wine is a key contributor to the improvement of living and working conditions for over 12,000 people in the Western Cape. For each bottle of Fairtrade wine sold, 70 cents of the retail price goes back to the farm workers.

Earthbound is the only Fairtrade wine producer in South Africa that is also certified organic. It is a joint venture established between Distell, black entrepreneurs and the local Mamre community trust, and is one of the premium brands in the Cape Legends stable.

2014 was a banner year for Earthbound, which was awarded one of the top medals in the 2014 Michelangelo International Wine and Spirit Awards. The Earthbound Chenin Blanc 2014 received a Gran d’Or (Double Gold) re-affirming the quality of the range both locally and internationally. The victory followed days after four of its wines were medal-winners at the International Wine & Spirit Competition: Earthbound Pinot Noir 2012, Earthbound Pinotage 2012, Earthbound Chenin Blanc 2014 and Earthbound Sauvignon Blanc 2014.

"This just goes to show that wine can be organic and give serious consideration to the health and well-being of those who produce it, and still bring home the major awards," said Démari Kellerman global marketing manager of Cape Legends wine wines and Earthbound.

A Fortnight of Fairtrade
