Discover some of South Africa's over-delivering wines that are also absolute bargains; ideal for sipping during the winter months.

There are two seasons of drinking wine in South Africa, 1) Summer, whereby you have to drink a lot of white wine to beat the heat, 2) Winter, whereby you have to drink lots of red wine to beat the cold. Both seasons are equally important to my palatte but so too is saving those pennies, so with that in mind, here are my pick for winter savers this August.

Neethlingshof Malbec 2012

Few wines scream braai-time like a good, juicy Malbec and for R99 in our shop, this is an absolute steal.

It's rich and full of plum and luscious berry flavours whilst been smooth and far too easy to consume.

Stellenzicht Sauvignon Blanc

A white wine may not immediately spring to mind when looking for winter tipples, but for pairing with lighter dishes, this Sauvignon Blanc really works a treat. You'll find it to be deliciously creamy and lingering with green notes and crisp acidity. Doesn't that sound inspiring?

Kleine Zalze cellar selection Chenin Blanc bush vines

Another great white wine to stock up on. Did you know that Kleine Zalze is the number one South African brand in the UK (on trade) and their Family Reserve Chenin Blanc 2013 won Best White Wine at Concours Mondial du Bruxelles 2015 - you can't keep this winery down. This Chenin Blanc is vibrant in tropical fruit and will have you wishing for hotter days.

Perdeberg Cabernet Sauvignon

For best value for money, I really think Perdeberg has a lot to offer and in case you were wondering about their labels, whilst they are fun and different, they are also about their ongoing contributions to the conservation of Cape mountain zebra. .This Cabernet is juicy, dark fruit and a touch of vanilla makes it an easy-drinking red for anyone's palatte.

Cavalli Cremelo

This may be a very light and floral wine that seems juxtaposed with our current weather, but it’s an absolute bargain. Peach and stone fruit throughout and a broad mouthfeel give this wine gravitas. I think the label design is attractive too.
