The late Nelson Mandela left a profound legacy that has touched just about every person on earth, and nowhere was the message so strongly apparent as when presented by two of his own relatives.

Daughter Dr. Makaziwe Mandela and granddaughter Tukwini Mandela were in town Monday to talk about the famous man, and the wine that bears his name and heritage: The House of Mandela Wines, to which his spirit is dedicated.

The two spoke of their relative with reverence and love, and shared snapshot moments of how life was lived within the Mandela home and how down to earth he was, always reaching out to everyone with grace, warmth and wit.

“My grandfather always had a smile, and was always making sure there was laughter around him,” said Tukwini, who, along with her mother, is at the helm of the company.

“Yet, he treated everyone he met with the same amount of respect — it could have been a street cleaner, yet he held him in the highest regard,” added Makaziwe, whose features bear a stunning resemblance to her late father. “He never looked down at anyone, everyone was his equal.”

The House of Mandela wines were created to commemorate the life and spirit of the great man, and the Sauvignon Blanc is a certified fair-trade wine inspired by Mandela’s values of “love, courage, cultural traditions and ancestral roots.”
