Thirteen winemakers from all over the winemaking regions of South Africa are coming together at Avontuur Estate near Somerset West to celebrate this magic varietal, which is catching the spotlight on its own at the first Cabernet Franc Carnival on Saturday, 20 June.

As Toit Wessels of Ridgeback Wines says: “My passion for Cabernet Franc lies in a deep respect for the cultivar and a humility in the privilege of making it. Cabernet Franc is both brutal and beautiful, not forgiving in the slightest, but the most complex and rewarding wine to make when it is well prepared in the vineyard, applying the correct manipulations at the critical times. The result is the finest full bodied and elegant display of flavour that any wine has to offer."

Dieter Sellmeyer of Lynx Wines comments: “I love the fresh herbal mintiness which immediately identifies a good Cabernet Franc and think a really good food pairing for this wine is a lamb biryani. The wealth of herbs and flavours in the biryani brings out the best of the Cab Franc. The wine also has enough grip to stand up to some spiciness

Kim McFarlane of Hermanuspietersfontein loves the varietal as it’s such a versatile cultivar and can easily adapt to any region and Terroir. “The Cabernet franc from our cooler climate Sondagskloof farm produces a elegant wine with a European minerality,” she says.

A gourmet pizza truck, a belgian waffle stand, breakfast or lunch in the Avontuur Restaurant, cosy seating and music will ensure a relaxed afternoon of tasting wine with friends and fans.

Participating wineries are Avontuur Estate, Camberley Wines, Cape Chamonix, CK Wines, Doolhoof Wine Estate, Druk-My-Niet Wine Estate, Hermanuspietersfontein, Lynx Wines, Mont du Toit, Ormonde Vineyards, Raats Family Wines, Ridgeback and Nelson Family Vineyards.

Tickets are R120 pp which includes the tastings and a tasting glass. Tickets available at www.plankton.mobi or by contacting bjorn@cvomarketing.co.za. Information: 021 981-0216.
