The first Cabernet Franc Carnival which took place at Avontuur Estate between Stellenbosch and Somerset West yesterday, drew a crowd of around 200 lovers of the niche varietal to this winery, itself a long-time producer of a single varietal Cabernet Franc.
Thirteen of South Africa’s best exponents of Cabernet Franc showed off their wines for tasting and sale to an intrigued and generally knowledgeable wine loving group. A few wineries like Nelson Family Vineyards and Raats Family Wines brought along some blends, highlighting the versatility of this Bordeaux grape.

Wineries were invited to attend from wide ranging areas like Hermanus, Wellington, Paarl and Stellenbosch, which gave tasters the opportunity to experience the impact of different terroirs on the wine.

Mostly however it was a celebration of Cabernet Franc in its purest form, and as one of the well known wine journalists who attended, said; “ This is one of the varietals which can make a name for South Africa world-wide, and it’s about time that it gets more attention and publicity.”

Visitors were entertained by live music and could enjoy pizza, waffles and a full menu from the Avontuur Estate Restaurant during the afternoon. They enjoyed interacting with winemakers and winery representatives on the terrace at Avontuur on a sunny winter afternoon, overlooking the green paddocks, False Bay and far-off Table Mountain.

Participating wineries were: Avontuur Estate, Camberley Wines, Cape Chamonix, CK Wines, Doolhoof Wine Estate, Druk-My-Niet Wine Estate, Hermanuspietersfontein, Lynx Wines, Mont du Toit, Ormonde Vineyards,Raats Family Wines, Ridgeback and Nelson Family Vineyards.
