The
De Krans Tinta Roriz 2013, a dry red wine cultivar, was announced as the
National Winner in its category at this year’s competition. Last year the De
Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2011 was chosen as the National Winner in the Port
category at the same competition.
Adding
to this year’s excitement two other wines from De Krans were chosen as winners
for the Little Karoo, Swartberg and Prins Albert Wards. The Top Port was
awarded to the Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2012, and the Top Touriga Nacional was
awarded to the Touriga Nacional 2014.
The
De Krans Tinta Roriz 2013 (also referred to as the Spanish varietal
Tempranillo) has already performed well in other competitions since its release.
In June it was named as one of the Top 10 CAPPA Portuguese wines in South
Africa, sharing centre stage with the De Krans Touriga Nacional 2014. At the
end of 2014 winemaker Louis van der Riet was named as one of the three
finalists in the Diners Club Young Winemakeer of the Year Competition for the
Tinta Roriz 2013.
Van
der Riet says the wine, which is a deep red colour, has complex aromas of dark
fruit, cassis and fresh mulberries, beautifully complemented with vanilla and
spice flavours. A full-bodied wine with soft, juicy tannins resulting in a
beautiful finish. The wine was left to age for 12 months in 2nd and
3rd fill French oak barrels, and is currently only available from
the cellar at R60 per bottle.
The
Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Tritonia Calitzdorp Blend
wines form part of a series of unique red wines from De Krans, produced
exclusively from Portuguese grape varieties. Superb food wines and are best
suited game and ostrich dishes.
