Founded
10 years ago, the SA Terroir Wine Awards sets about to acknowledge wine which
truly represents a specific wine terroir. Only wines certified as wines of
origin single vineyard, estate-produced, wards or small districts not divided
into wards, are legible to enter. These criteria make it one of the most
exclusive wine competitions in the world, and boast a relatively high number of
entries.
This
year’s judging panel comprised a panel of experienced industry role players,
from journalists to winemakers. The panel included Andrea Freeborough, Charl
Theron, David Biggs, Duimpie Bayly, Karen Glanfield, Pierre Marais and Samarie
Smith.
Grapes for the Lanzerac
Chardonnay 2013 were sourced from seven different vineyard blocks in the
Jonkershoek Valley. The vines vary in age from nine to 21 years, and consist of
different clones to add complexity to the wine. The blocks are mainly from deep
sandy soils and cover an area of 5.55 hectares. The yield for the 2013 vintage
was 8.65 tons/ha, with an altitude of 166-375m above sea level.
Cellar Master, Wynand Lategan, says the wine displays
prominent citrus aromas on the nose followed by a complexity of flavours
including lemon, clover, ginger and vanilla. The palate shows excellent balance
between fruit, acidity and softness with a full body and lingering aftertaste.
Best enjoyed with mild seafood curries with buttery
sauces, fish cakes, chicken Caesar Salad, or even peach and mango based salads.
Available directly from the Tasting Room at R95 per
bottle, and most retail outlets nationwide.
