Spier produces one of the 10 best Chenin Blanc’s in the country – again!

Spier’s 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2014 has been recognised as one of the best Chenin Blancs in the country through its inclusion in the Standard Bank Chenin Blanc Top 10 Challenge. This is the second year in a row that a Chenin from Spier was ranked in the top 10 – last year it was the turn of the Woolworths Private Collection 2013.
The wine farm was awarded R20,000, which will be donated to the Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR), an NGO which conducts training, education, research, and support to projects dealing with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) across South Africa.
In addition to the Chenin Blanc, Spier’s 21 Gables range includes a Sauvignon Blanc, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Pinotage. Each celebrate the farm’s winemaking heritage – which goes all the way back to the early 1700s – as well as the Spier’s unique architectural feature: an unrivalled 21 Cape Dutch gables surrounding its historic farmyard, the Werf. Following meticulous restoration, the Werf has been restored to its original purpose: a hub of activity and creativity; a meeting place where ideas are exchanged.
The 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2014’s grapes were handpicked from mature vines on the Tygerberg Hills. The wine matured for 14 months in French barrels (46% new and 54% second fill). It has soft aromas of dried apricots accompanied by hints of oak and vanilla. On the palate are flavours of white peaches, almond paste and windfall oranges. Enjoy with crispy pork belly, duck breast with honey and spices, or pickled fish.
