We spend most of our time at work, so how do you help someone add value to your business irrespective of their literacy and numeracy levels? The VinPro Foundation has partnered with industry viticulturists to create a comprehensive do-it-yourself training package aimed at vineyard workers, which covers the technical aspects of farming from soil preparation to harvesting.

When people know why they are doing something they tend to do it better. This translates to one instruction leading to the right action – which equates to better quality work and improved productivity. We believe that all people can be trained, but often the training is pitched to individuals with a certain level of schooling, excluding a large number of vineyard workers.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The training DVD’s consist of ten modules covering all aspects of the wine grape growing season, including pruning, vineyard establishment, vine development, canopy management, soil management, disease and pest control, irrigation and fertilisation, harvesting of wine grapes and soil science. Each module is roughly 30 min long and comes with a complementary electronic learner guide which includes photos, illustrations and worksheets. The package also includes a facilitator guide that assists the trainer to use the training material effectively.

NOT JUST FOR VINEYARD WORKERS

The power of these DVD’s is that they explain technical aspects in a simplified way even for people higher up in the reporting chain who have never been exposed to viticulture and vineyards. The DVD’s can be used by all wine companies to introduce their supportive functions to viticulture, the start of the value-chain. These supportive functions include but are not limited to marketing managers, human resources, IT and front-of-house tasting room employees.

ACCREDITATION

Producers and managers can therefore provide the training themselves at a time and place that suits them best. After completing the training, application can be done for formal assessment by external assessors, organised via VinPro. The material is aligned with key sections of the AgriSeta NQF level 1 qualification for Plant Production and Farming.
