Cinsaut [you can spell it with or without the l], formerly known as Hermitage, is one of the parents of Pinotage, the other being Pinot Noir, and has been a grape which has in the last few years been lurking in the background.

With the advent of a number of young winemakers who are making their mark on the Cape winemaking scene, realising that some very exciting lighter style red wines can be made from this grape, there are a number of Cinsauts on the shelves.

Fortunately Perdeberg Winery situated against the Paardeberg in the Paarl Wine Appellation still has wine grape growers providing them with Cinsaut. Fortunately too, some of the vineyards are of venerable age.

The vines producing the grapes for the Perdeberg The Vineyard Collection Cinsault 2014 are 30 years old. The vineyards are planted in Malmesbury shale and are affected by cooling maritime breezes of both the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. This means longer ripening time, this greater flavour. Being dry land vineyards, the berries are smaller and because of the higher skin to juice ratio the flavours are enhanced. The vineyard yielded an even handed 8 toms per hectare. Albertus Louw, the Cellarmaster and his team, in particular Riaan Moller who is responsible for the winery’s red wines.

It looks like
As with their Dry Land Collection, Perdeberg have pushed the envelope and created a new look that is very much theirs. Elegant Burgundy shaped bottle with its elegant red label. In the glass it is a translucent cherry red.

It smells like
Sappy ripe red berry and cherry fruits.

It tastes like
A gentle delicate red with waves of the lovely red fruits and the rustic undertow of roadside brambles. This is a wine you want to chill before serving.

It’s good with
Being delicate and oh easy to drink, it makes a good glass on its own. As for the food match, it is excellent with pork belly, does wonders to a butter roasted chicken or a flavourful vegetarian dish. However a real match is with Nina Timm’s Crispy Crunchy Buffalo Wings. Click here for her recipe.
