Simonsig Estate
Three red wines in Simonsig Estate’s Malan Family Selection achieved places in this year’s prestigious Top 100 Wines Competition, including one wine adjudged Best in Class. Simonsig Frans Malan 2014, a blend of Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot named after Simonsig’s founder, topped the Cape Blend Class.

The Estate’s Tiara Bordeaux-blend and icon Redhill Pinotage joined the Frans Malan in the Top 100 list for 2016.

The annual Top 100 list, the result of rigorous judging of the finest South African wine offerings, is recognised as a leading indicator of the country’s finest wines. As of this year the Top 100 was held in conjunction with the National Wine Challenge. Here Simonsig’s white wines and Cap Classique also came to the fore, winning six Double Gold medals, one each for the Chardonnay 2014 and Chardonnay 2015, Sunbird Sauvignon Blanc 2015, Chenin Avec Chêne 2014, Chenin Avec Chêne 2015 and Kaapse Vonkel Brut 2012.

According to Johan Malan, Cellarmaster at Simonsig Estate, the achievement at this year’s SA Top 100 underscored the Estate’s red wine pedigree.

“Simonsig has an extensive range of wines and we are fortunate to see our diversity regularly awarded at wine shows,” he said. “While one would obviously like as many of your wines as possible to make the Top 100, we are heartened by the recognition that three of our classic wines received this honour. It is a fact that red wines form the pinnacle for wine recognition, and with South Africa producing the finest red wines in its history, it is a major achievement to see our Tiara, Redhill Pinotage and Frans Malan now being considered among the finest in the country.

“All three wines are a tribute to the unique terroir of the Stellenbosch region where Simonsig is situated and showcase our commitment to site-specific wine-making.”
Johan says the SA Top 100 is an excellent vehicle for guiding the consumer. “Besides the high quality of South African wines, there is also the fact that the wine-lover has never had so many wines to choose from due to the proliferation of producers and wine labels,” he says.

“With its distinctive logo the list of SA Top 100 Wines is a welcome indication to consumers looking for wines which have passed a stringent selection process recognising top quality.”

Simonsig now counts as one of the top performers in the Top 100 list with no less than 20 wines achieving this accolade in 6 years. Our aim is to make consistent quality over the years which the wine lover can buy and enjoy with confidence.
