This award winning Tulbagh wine cellar received top honours at the 2016 SAWi (South African Wine Index) Awards when it was announced as Top Red Wine Producer of the Year. Adding to this prestigious title, Saronsberg was also awarded Top Category Rhône Blend for their Saronsberg Full Circle.

This follows on previous successes at this competition, including the trophy for Winery of the Year in 2015, as well as Best Red Wine Producer, Best Rhone Style Blend and Best Viognier. 2015 also saw Saronsberg being awarded Gold and Platinum awards for its Saronsberg Shiraz, Provenance Shiraz and Provenance Red while Dewaldt Heyns and Chris Immelman received recognition for Best Winemaker and Viticulturist respectively.

The SAWi awards, established in 2009, aim to give credit to the wines and farms that consistently do well within the local and international arena. All South African wines are evaluated and given a score derived from a multi-phase algorithm to help wine lovers identify consistent excellence.

A unique ‘Algorithm of Excellence’ is applied during the competition to measure the performance of individual wines, across multiple vintages. It then compares and condenses the results from more than 100 multinational competitions, reviews and listings, acknowledging the nature of the competition and any additional accolades bestowed on a wine, and expresses this as a single value out of 100.

SAWi sets two aspirational benchmarks against which to measure wine quality: Grand Gold status, which is awarded to wines that score more than 93 Index points, and Platinum status, for wines which score above 95. Together, these sets comprise the ‘South African Grand Wines Collection’ of which the following Saronsberg wines form part:

  • Saronsberg Full Circle Shiraz Mourvèdre Viognier – Platinum, 100 points.
  • Saronsberg Shiraz – Platinum, 100 points.
  • Saronsberg Provenance Range Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Malbec/Petit Verdot – Platinum, 98.6 points.
  • Saronsberg Cellar Provenance Range Shiraz – Platinum, 96.4 points.
  • Saronsberg Viognier – Grand Gold, 94 points.
  • Saronsberg Brut Sparkling Wine Méthode Cap Classique – Grand Gold, 93.2 points.

“These accolades are a testimony to the team’s persistence in the pursuit of excellence,” says winemaker and cellar master, Dewaldt Heyns. “It also reaffirms that we are on the right path, not only with our hard work and commitment, but also in building our brand and making sure we keep the high standards we have set for ourselves.”
