Carla van der Merwe finds the best combination of warmth, wine and relaxation in the wine routes of the Cape.

Stellenbosch

DeMorgenzon wine estate, recent winner of the world's best Chardonnay and home to musical vineyards, is nearly at the end of Stellenboschkloof road and home to world-class wines. Get comfortable in front of the roaring fireplace as you enjoy either the colourful DMZ range, intricate Maestro blends or more serious Reserve range. Open 7 days a week the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere will make you feel right at home.

Hermanus

Benguela Cove, situated on the Bot River lagoon with panoramic views of the Kogelberg reserve and Palmiet mountains, offers a bevy of wine pairing options ranging from sweet to salty to enjoy while you relax by the roaring log fire. Pop in on a Sunday to enjoy their buy one get one free carafe special and some live music. Look out for the new labels as the brand has seen some changes in packaging over the last few months.

Rawsonville

Du Toitskloof cellars, located on the old N1 in the Breedekloof Valley, offers free wine tasting and a homely friendly experience when you visit. Tasting options include the entire range and the staff are knowledgeable and proud of their own Fairtrade wine. After indulging in some local hospitality and walking away with a few cases (the wines are very well-priced) visit the onsite Melissa's restaurant for a hearty pizza.

Franschhoek

Grande Provence is a destination in itself. Visit the estate to taste premium wines in the industrially-styled tasting room, enjoy fine dining gourmet dishes at The Restaurant and marvel at the sculpure garden and the onsite art gallery. This is one of my favourite estates to visit as the the art changes frequently and thus always offers surprizes and new pieces to marvel at. Keep an eye on their website for exhibition dates.

Worcester

Overhex Winery situated just outside Worcester is home to the quirky Balance and multiple award-winning Survivor range of wines. This child-friendly venue has an indoor playpen and comfortable seating around the fireplace. Unwind with glass in hand as you taste and savour the many wines on offer before heading over to the Bistro for a quick bite to eat. The menu includes wood-fired pizzas and they often have special food and wine pairings available.
