“Winemakers have a few things to keep in mind when producing a lower cost wine,” says Yonder Hill Wines winemaker Abe Beukes at a recent tasting held to choose six wines to serve in the Cape Wine Academy wine theatre at this year’s Capegate Wine Fest, which takes place on 26 and 27 August.

“ A higher yield per hectare is important to deliver a lower cost per tonnage, you have to produce a wine which can be sold reasonably soon so that the return on investment happens quickly, a larger cellar usually works out cheaper due to economies of scale and wood treatment and packaging costs also come into the equation.”

These are usually the furthest thing from the minds of consumers who happily quaff “Under R100” wines and the quality/price ratio of South African wines have made locals used to good wines at affordable prices. A selection of these wines will be presented in tutored tasting by the CWA at 12h30 on Saturday, 27 August in the custom built theatre at Capegate Centre as part of the annual Wine Festival.

The six wines featuring in the “Choose Quality for Under R100” tasting are:  Balance Bubbly Boldly Brut, Y Sauvignon Blanc 2016, Biocape Wines Chardonnay 2015,  Deux Frères Blanc De Noir 2015, Bonnievale Cabernet/Merlot 2015 and Diemersfontein Thokozani SMV 2014.

Other fun tastings in the theatre include Chocolate and Wine Pairings by La Couronne and Diemersfontein respectively, a Biltong and Wine Pairing by Stellenbosch Hills and the “Taste Sensations” pairing by Overhex Winery. The Cape Wine Academy will present Pinotage – Local is Lekker, the Under R100 wine tasting and Dessert Wine, Port and Fortifieds – SA’s Pride in various time slots over the two days of the event. Entry is free on a first-come-first-served basis to Festival ticket holders. For the full programme visit the Capegate Centre website.

Participating wineries include: Alexanderfontein/Ormonde, Arendskloof/Eagle’s Cliff, Beyerskloof Wines, Biocape Wines, Bonnievale Cellar,  Diemersfontein Wines, Dieu Donnè Vineyards, Deux Frères Wines, Du Toitskloof Wines, Edgebaston, Eerstehoop Wines, Fledge & Co, Groenland, Imbuko Wines, La Couronne Wine Estate, MWS, Orange River Cellars, Overhex Wines International, Perdeberg Winery, Peter Bayly Wines, Stellenbosch Hills, Villiera Wines, Villiersdorp Cellar and Yonder Hill Wines.
