These exclusive awards pay tribute to the effort put in by Boschendal’s young cellar masters who meticulously balance traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovation to produce award-winning wines exported around the world.
Boschendal’s young winemakers, Lizelle Gerber and Richard Duckitt, count amongst a group of visionary South African wine makers who continually produce wines of superior quality.
They are encouraged to experiment creatively in the cellar to produce premium wines of modern sophistication, including sought after limited volume editions such as the Grand d’Or winner ‘De Werf 2013’ which is exclusively available at Boschendal estate.
This special barrel selection aged in 50% new and 50% second fill French oak barrels is a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Cabernet Franc, 13% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot, 5% Malbec. Only the 15 best barrels from all five Bordeaux varietals were selected and carefully blended to bring forward the best of each varietal and their unique terroir expression.
The ‘Grand d’Or’ winner Boschendal 1685 Shiraz is a 100% Shiraz which displays unique characteristics typical of the variety of soils on high-quality vineyard sites around Stellenbosch, Elgin and the Swartland. Expressive deep black fruit and riper vintage fruit expression with pepper spice is detailed with richness and juiciness, a round, integrated fruit core and silky ripe tannins. This Boschendal Shiraz shows elegant freshness and length with lingering fruit on the finish.

The Michelangelo Awards proudly celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, having grown from small and humble beginnings in South Africa in 1997 to the equivalent of other international wine competitions held around the world such as the International Wine and Spirits Competition and Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.
The wines were judged blind by a dynamic panel of 25 international wine and spirits judges from 22 countries according to the international 100-point system and awarded Platinum, Gran d’Or, Gold and Silver medals. In addition, 15 trophies are awarded for class winners.
In addition to two Double Gold medals, Boschendal also claimed two Silver Medals for the Boschendal 1685 S&M 2014 and the Boschendal Sauvignon Blanc 2016, adding further accolades to the recent myriad of awards bestowed upon various wines within the Boschendal portfolio at prestigious competitions including, the International Wine and Spirits Competition and the Sommelier Selection Awards.
