Jakkalsvlei
Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar was awarded three medals, one being a coveted Gran d'Or, at the 2016 Michelangelo Wine Awards.

The Michelangelo Awards, widely considered equivalent to other well-known international wine competitions such as the International Wine & Spirits Competition and the famous Concours Mondial de Bruxelles awards, celebrated their 20th anniversary this year. As with previous years, the world’s top professional wine judges were invited to rate the best that SA has to offer. All wines were judged blind according to the international 100-point system and awarded Platinum, Gran d’Or, Gold or Silver medals.

This year’s ceremony took place on the evening of 26 September at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West and Jakkalsvlei is proud to announce that they collected three medals on the night. For a small cellar that produces and sells only nine wines, this is a tremendous achievement.

Jakkalsvlei’s big winner was their 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon that was awarded a Gran d’Or (double gold) medal. This wine is no stranger to the awards scene as the 2013 vintage was a gold medal winner at last year’s event. This elegant wine with its typical varietal character, berry and plum flavours, and notes of oak, received a score of between 93 and 96 out of 100 from the judges.

Their well-rounded Pinotage/Merlot blend was also celebrated with a gold medal translating into a score of between 89 and 93. The 2015 Mount Cuvée highlights the unique character of each cultivar while bursting with plum and berry flavours, and is the perfect accompaniment to any braaied meat.

Jakkalsvlei’s very popular, fresh and fun 2016 La Perlé Rosé (Pinotage/Red Muscadel blend) is a favourite with seafood dishes and great for warm summer days and was awarded a silver medal by the judges.

But the good news didn’t end here for this private cellar. At the SA Young Wine Show, Jakkalsvlei also received awards for their Red Muscadel (Silver) and Hanepoot (Gold). This wine show is the oldest in Africa and dates back to 1833 when the first one was held by the Cape of Good Hope Agricultural Society (now Agri-Expo) in Gardens, Cape Town. The SA Young Wine Show gives winemakers the opportunity to showcase the best wines of the current vintage and their mission is to judge the quality of wines that are still in their infancy and have some way to go before they are bottled. Recognition is then given to the production capabilities of a wine cellar.
