Adventure at Avontuur Wine Estate

This time around, Sheryl took the three Dutch interns to the Avontuur Wine Estate. They were given a tour around the farm and had a wine tasting with an added twist!

Do you know those kind of movies, where a famous actress arrives at a beautiful estate in a fancy car? Of course you do. I played in one of those movies, or so it felt… Now you are thinking: “what could she be talking about?”. I am talking about the Avontuur Wine Estate. They have a stud farm and own more than a hundred horses. The also have a superb broodmare band from around the world.

Having arrived in the perfect weather, Philip Taberer, one of the owners, gave us a tour around the estate and told us everything about their prized horses.
I kept thinking: “It would be so wonderful to wake up, step out your bed and take a walk through the farm”. It felt like a little fairytale.
This was one of the moments where my great love for South Africa grew even further.

After the estate tour, winemaker Jan van Rooyen told us a lot about the wine processes and he had us tasting different wines from their portfolio. Before we came to South Africa, we didn’t know much about the wine making processes. And now we are learning everything!

Last but not least, we enjoyed a wine tasting matching macarons and fudge, hosted by Cobie van Oort. This time, the other Dutchies and I, were “guinea pigs” for their new macarons and wine pairing. We had to match macaron and fudge with wine.
Although we aren’t experienced wine tasters, we did have our preferences. I thought the Avontuur Pinot Noir Chardonnay matched well with the green-apple macaron, but we will see which matches are decided on in October!
You too can enjoy the macarons and wine pairing from 17-31 October.

We’ve been at wine.co.za for almost four weeks now and besides our office hours, we are getting the opportunity to learn so much more about wine during tastings. We are so thankful to them. While enjoying every moment in our new beautiful surroundings, we realize that when we are back in The Netherlands there is a cold winter waiting for us…
But for now we do not think about that, we still have five months to go!
