DeMorgenzon is now recognised as one of South Africa’s top white wine producers thanks to two new accolades for the Stellenbosch winery on the international stage.

The DeMorgenzon team – headed up by leading businesswoman Wendy Appelbaum and winemaker and general manager Carl van der Merwe – has once again beaten the French at their own game as the 2015 DeMorgenzon Reserve Chenin Blanc has been selected as the best Chenin Blanc and Trophy Winner at the 2016 International Wine and Spirits Competition.

It is a hat trick for this lauded wine which this year also took gold medals at both the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine Challenge.

The Reserve Chenin Blanc is not the only world champion in the DeMorgenzon stable. This follows on the DeMorgenzon Chardonnay Reserve 2015 being named best in the show and Trophy Winner by the 2016 Decanter World Wine Awards in London just a few months ago.

Meanwhile leading US wine critic Matt Kramer has named the DeMorgenzon “The Divas” Chenin Blanc as one of the three “most exciting white wines of the 21st century” and selected the wine to be showcased at the prestigious Wine Spectator’s New York Wine Experience which takes place from October 20 to 22. It will be shown in a special tasting to more than 1000 wine critics, winery owners, industry leaders and wine lovers from around the world.

Why “The Divas”? A few barrels stood out as exceptional, highlighting the precision and intensity that South African Chenin Blanc is capable of delivering.

“The Divas” is available from a few selected outlets in the US at $100 per bottle and exclusively from the DeMorgenzon tasting room.

DeMorgenzon owner Wendy Appelbaum is delighted at the continued international recognition for the estate’s wines: “We have always been determined to make the best wine possible and it is gratifying to see all the hard work paying dividends while also showcasing South Africa on a global platform”.

Van der Merwe believes that Chenin Blanc is ideally suited to DeMorgenzon’s terroir: “We are blessed with some of the best terroir in the world which best expresses the fullness and ripeness of the Chenin Blanc variety, showing tropical fruit and citrus, while allowing the savoury characters of beeswax and honey to be expressed as a balance to the opulence of the variety. The remarkable natural acidity has now become a benchmark for DeMorgenzon’s white wines and provides exceptional palate length and balance.”
