Raats Family Wines
To date, the 2009, 2013 and the 2014 vintages have received the coveted 5-stars by Platter. The MR de Compostella or constellation of stars was started as a joint effort between Mvemve and Raats and the elegant Bordeaux blend has consistently scored with local and international wine critics since the maiden vintage was released in 2004. For the past three consecutive years, the wine has been included on the wine list for Emirates Airlines’ First Class passengers.
Some of the most recent global endorsements received by the 2014 vintage, included scoring 95 points in the Tim Atkin SA Report earlier this year. The 2013 vintage also received high praise from Atkin with 95 points and 94 points from Neal Martin in The Wine Advocate. In addition, it was voted the winning SA Bordeaux-style blend at the 2015 RisCura Redhot Wine Awards. The MR de Compostella 2012 scored 96 points from Neal Martin in The Wine Advocate (Oct 2014) and was listed in the Top 100 Cellar Selection by Wine Enthusiast USA in 2015. Neal Martin proclaimed the 2008 vintage as one of the most memorable wines in the world after scoring it an incredible 96 points in the January 2012 issue of The Wine Advocate.
According to Raats, this consistency is one of the benchmarks they has set for themselves as winemakers. “The MR de Compostella has gained a name for itself as being a consistently high quality wine and having the Platter Guide confirming this with its third 5-stars makes it really special. This guide was the first of its kind in the country and after 36 years, still remains immensely popular amongst consumers. A 5-star rating is not easily achieved, so we are very pleased,” mentioned Raats.
