Hemel-en-Aarde winery Bouchard Finlayson will kick Cape Town’s festive season off on Friday 25 November 2016, when it teams up with The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa to present a gourmet food and wine dinner in Azure Restaurant.

Hosted by winemaker Chris Albrecht and executive chef Christo Pretorius, diners can expect an exceptional dining experience, showcasing Bouchard Finlayson’s award-winning vintages matched to perfection with an exclusive four-course menu, served in the luxurious comfort of one of Cape Town’s most scenic settings.

As the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean, dinner will commence with Fizantakraal Trout, served with tartare, smoked roe, avocado puree, kewpie mayo and wild rice puffs, accompanied by a glass of Walker Bay Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2015 - a powerful yet elegant wine with flavours of fresh fig, white peach and mint infusion with a classic herbal finish.

Chef Christo and his kitchen brigade will continue with Guinea Fowl and Squid as the second course – sous vide breast, squid broth, garden peas, barbequed sweet corn and black garlic, paired with the Bouchard Finlayson Missionvale Chardonnay 2014. Year on year, this wine has been a Grand Gold Award winner in the South African Wine Index (SAWi), while this particular vintage scored no less than 93 points in the recent Tim Atkin South African Report. The 2014 is complex and fruity with peach, lime and green apple flavours, and hints of vanilla and nutty tones from aging in the best French oak barrels.

Moving on to the main course, Venison Loin will be served with butternut squash, Parmigiano Reggiano, truffle, baby spinach and juniper berry jus. Paired with this dish will be the award-winning Bouchard Finlayson 2013 Galpin Peak Pinot Noir, a classically old world style pinot that reveals peppery spice with blackberry and cherry notes and ends in a harmonious and long earthy finish. This flagship wine did not only score a 5-star Platter rating locally, but also received a Gold medal in the prestigious 2016 Global Pinot Noir Masters awards which rate the finest Pinot Noirs in the world.

The food and wine pairing will conclude with Bouchard Finlayson’s lauded Hannibal 2014, which was chosen earlier this year for the Sommeliers Selection Wine List, and received both the 2016 Top Cultivar Award and a Platinum Award in the South African Wine Index (SAWi). An intriguing blend of Sangiovese and Pinot Noir with spicy tones that overlay a gentle silky, “leather feel” back palate, emphasized by olive and black cherry tainted, cranberry laced flavours, the Hannibal will perfectly complement the final course of Boerekaas Biscuit, plum mousse, poached cherries, plum gel, watercress and walnut crumble, before a selection of handmade Petit Fours will be served with coffee or tea.

Established in 1989 in the temperate Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on 125 hectares (312 acres) of Walker Bay's prime viticultural land, Bouchard Finlayson Vineyard and Winery is a small cellar dedicated to the quality production of Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc. Ever since releasing their first vintages, the name Bouchard Finlayson has been internationally synonymous with excellence. Today, owned by the Red Carnation Hotels’ Tollman family and under the leadership of Victoria Tollman and Cellar Master Peter Finlayson, 22 hectares (54 acres) of the estate are currently under vine with 50% devoted to the varietal for which Peter is most acclaimed – Pinot noir. Other cultivars under production include Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Sangiovese, as well as a handful under exploration.
