This unique concept gives a twist to the cuisine sensation that is the ‘food truck revolution’, with the bus refurbished into a bar serving and highlighting the innovative brand Arniston Bay Infusions, the farm’s heritage brand Welmoed and the home brand Stellenbosch Vineyards.
Craft beer will join the menu alongside a menu developed around wood fired pizzas and burgers from the open air kitchen. Think The Conductor, two wood fired patties, smoked mozzarella or Magic Forest, a mushroom inspired thin based pizza. Salads join the menu as well as yeast waffles with a selection of mouthwatering toppings. “I have been searching for the perfect burger for a while, a burger is a very serious thing!”, says Chef Nic van Wyk who has been experimenting with dough to create authentic pizzas out the wood fired pizza oven, and wood fired burgers with ‘smashed’ patties.
The outdoor venue is furnished in true vintage style, with refurbished bus chairs making the experience fun, and familiar. Bus shelter inspired booths will be dotted around the grass surrounding the Bus Stop, for guests wanting a bit more privacy to enjoy lazy afternoons and evenings.
“We are working towards creating a comprehensive food and wine experience for our guests, expanding our offerings on the farm and making it the ideal destination for a great day out in the winelands. Stellenbosch Vineyards has a selection of brands that are all doing well in their category, and with this addition it makes the path forward easier to promote these brands in different categories.” Says MD Eduan Steynberg.
Arniston Bay Infusions, a refreshing selection of fruit infused wine-based blends, has done extremely well at festivals over the past few years with a large following, cementing the fact that yes, there is a serious side to wine, but there is a market that’s also interested in the fun side of experimenting with wine. This product can also start to bridge the gap between non-wine drinkers to increase the market of wine consumers.
The concept comes from Head of Innovations at Stellenbosch Vineyards, Stephan van Rooyen with the idea that a bus stop or bus often signifies an exciting journey, a place of social interaction and most likely the end of the working day or start of the weekend. There are also plans in the work to take the concept further by creating a mobile bus that then travels the country showcasing at festivals and private events. “I am excited, it’s hard work, but we are all eager to embark on the project not only creating more of an offering at Stellenbosch Vineyards, but also making the brand mobile. Our vision for The Bus Stop is to be the place of choice in your neighbourhood where old friends reunite, new friendships are made and to serve as the perfect place to escape from the everyday hustle and bustle of living in the fast lane.”
The Bus Stop is open to the public from 1 December 2016, with soft launches and trial runs happening before then. It joins the Tasting Room on the farm which offers platters wine tasting and unique pairings, with the restaurant Bistro 13 offering a more formal dining room, focusing on the premium Credo range, which performed exceptionally well in achieving accolades within the wine industry this year.
