Italian nobility with a sense of place firmly rooted in the Steenberg terroir is the crux of the 2014 vintage of Steenberg Nebbiolo.

Crafted predominantly from an older Nebbiolo vineyard planted in 1994 with a small portion of grapes from a younger block, the 2014 vintage is an elegant rendition of this classic Italian variety. While the earthy tones resonate with the Piedmont landscape, famous for its truffles and porcini, wild herbs and fynbos define its sense of place on the Steenberg foothills.

On the nose the wine has whiffs of rose petal, fynbos and dried wild herbs. The racy palate refreshes with hints of sour cherries, raspberries and hibiscus tea with beautifully integrated firm tannins boding well for the wine’s longevity.

“Decanting this wine promises to bring it to life even more,” says cellarmaster JD Pretorius who believes the evolution of the wine over the next decade will be a fascinating journey.

Visually seductive, this brilliant garnet red with its natural tart acidity typical of Nebbiolo stands up well to rich and hearty dishes. Executive Chef Archie Maclean of Catharina’s Restaurant recommends the Nebbiolo as the perfect foil for parmesan gratinated sirloin with a smattering of Italian artichoke, basil pesto and pickled aubergine.

Steenberg Nebbiolo 2014 is available at a cellar door price of R255.
