There are Chardonnays and there are Chardonnays, and for me the most appealing are those which have a story. The Mulderbosch Chardonnay 2015 has a story.

The Chardonnay grapes used for this wine are all from the Stellenbosch Appellation and are picked in a stretch of the finest grape wine areas from close to the False Bay Coast, through the Polkadraai Ward and up to the foothills of the majestic Simonsberg.

Naturally there are several microclimates in these vineyards with grapes ripening at different times each batch offering up part of the of the melding of flavours in a sum which is greater than its parts.

Excellent acidity levels providing freshness, fruit with great flavour, and excellent use of oak have resulted in an excellent expression of Stellenbosch Chardonnay. In the cellar 40% of the wines was fermented and matured for 9 months in French oak barrels, which the balance went into stainless steel tanks. The wines were then blended and prepared for bottling.

It looks like
Bottled under screw cap with the classical if somewhat quirky cigar style label for which the estate has become so well known.  In the glass, golden straw in colour.

It smells like
Sweet tropical limes, white fleshed peaches and supportive oak.

It tastes like
Lovely layered full palate into the long aftertaste.  Windfall citrus, melon textures and ripe stone fruit.  Very mineral and lovely undertow of the oak spice and vanilla.

It’s good with
Perfect food wine. Great with a pizza if you are having one hot out of the Mulderbosch Tasting Room Oven. Doesn’t need grand food, is happy with a butter roasted organic chicken. I am spending time on Lizet Hartley’s website this week, her food is so exciting and her Pork Shank Ragu with White Wine & Fennel is a dish which just loves a good full flavoured white wine.  Click here for her recipe.
