De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp has done it again! Not only did it stand out as one of the Top 10 Producers at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, but this award-winning producer also won the trophy for the Best Red Blend at the competition for the flagship De Krans Tritonia Red 2015, which is a dry red blend of Touriga Naçional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barocca and Tinta Amarela.

Other accolades awarded to De Krans included two Silver medals (De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2014 and the De Krans Tritonia White 2015) and a Bronze medal (De Krans Touriga Naçional 2015).

Earlier this year the De Krans Tritonia Red 2015 also received a Double Gold at the National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wines. Winemaker, Louis van der Riet describes the wine as having a ruby red colour, with complex flavours of violets, cloves and red fruit on the nose. It has a savoury and fine-grained structure, with lovely integrated wood and a delightful elegance on the palate. This is the perfect wine to enjoy during the colder months as it partners perfectly with ostrich, venison dishes, as well as a roasted leg of lamb.

The De Krans Tritonia White 2015 is a unique blend of the Portuguese varieties Malvasia Rei and Verdelho. It has a golden yellow colour, with fine flavours of honeysuckle, orange peel and straw opening up to floral blossoms, spice and vanilla oak. The taste is smooth and elegant, with dried orange, nuts and soft oak, an integrated acidity and fine tannins. It is a great accompaniment with seafood, especially salmon and sea trout. This wine has also been awarded 90 points in Wine Advocate recently.

The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2014, which has been a Top 100 wine at the National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wines, has a dark colour with plum red rim. This flagship port has a very aromatic nose of ripe red berries and cherries, violets and dark chocolate. It is a big wine full of ripe dark fruit notes, plums, mulberries and black currents. Well-rounded with smooth dark chocolate undertones and firm tannins results in n wine that would mature well over 30 years.

The De Krans Touriga Nacional 2015, which has also been chosen as a Top 100 wine at the National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wines earlier this year, is a very interesting unusual red varietal which lends itself to experimenting with food. It pairs well with venison and ostrich steaks, roasted lamb shank and springbok Carpaccio.

The Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show panel of judges, chaired by Michael Fridjhon, comprised a selection of highly experienced local and international wine experts, who judged 960 wines from 198 producers.
