KWV is pleased to announce that they have won the highest accolade possible, the Overall Grand Wines Collection Trophy, with an unprecedented 15 platinum accolades, at the 2017 South African Wine Index (SAWi) 'Grand Wines Collection’ Awards that took place on 17 June, at the luxurious Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.

“We are proud and honoured to have received this top accolade from SAWi. KWV has a special ability to source the best grapes from various growers and regions ensuring consistency and best possible quality, year after year. The award not only recognises this but also allows us to benchmark ourselves against other respected Fine Wine Producers of South Africa.”

KWV The Mentors, KWV Classic Collection, Heritage Collection Abraham Perold, Laborie and KWV 20-year-old brandy were all awarded.

SAWi brings together top producers under a new brand concept referred to as the ‘Grand Wines Collection’ (GWC), promoting South African fine wines as a collective offering the first ever cultivar 'ranking' list, and the most definitive measure of wine quality to date.

“Setting us apart from well-known wine awards, SAWi takes the opinions from more than 100 competitions and reviewers, making us different in the sense that we are a multi-vintage, multi-national award. We look at a bottle of wine over a ten-year rolling method, which speaks to the consistency of the wine quality,” says Izak Smit, SAWi MD.

To determine which wines distinguish itself from the rest, SAWi applies a rigorous methodology through its Algorithm of Excellence, ascribing a value to the various kinds of awards, to level the playing field and in doing so, properly assessing the quality status of every wine produced in the country, applying only to wines that have been produced consistently over the last decade.

Whilst all South African wines are ranked using the SAWi Algorithm or Excellence, only those wines that achieved an index value of 93 points or higher are considered for the SAWi GWC.

With 15 Platinum accolades, the Overall Trophy honours went to KWV, while the trophy for best brandy went to Laborie.
