Here are some of my favourite child friendly restaurants for lunch in the Winelands.

The Bakery at Jordan Wine Estate

One of my new favourites is The Bakery Restaurant at Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch. The food is outstanding, and the view breathtaking making it a winner for us. It is definitely a treat to dine here. There is a relaxed atmosphere, evident in the modern, yet simple décor in neutral shades with a splash of red, where visitors can unwind and enjoy the freshly produced fare amongst the aromas of baking bread, pastries and freshly brewed coffee. There is no jungle gym but the beautiful lawns in front of the outside deck provide plenty of space for kids to play and explore around the dam.

Bistro at Stellenbosch Vineyards

The Bistro at Stellenbosch Vineyards located in the Stellenbosch Winelands on the Welmoed Wine Estate is a fabulous child-friendly restaurant serving delicious food in a relaxed ambiance with a lovely garden for kids to play in. There are two natural wood dream catcher jungle gyms nestled under shady trees and plenty of space for kids to run, play and kick a ball.

Bodega Restaurant at Dornier Wine Estate

Bodega pursues the perfect marriage between modern food preparation and classic elegance that has come to be expected from Dornier Wines. Fine wines are paired with fresh, seasonal farm cuisine in a relaxed, alfresco setting. The spacious veranda is the perfect place to relax, while enjoying and meal and taking in the stunning scenery. There is a play area for the little ones, next to the veranda, which can be seen from the tables. They serve a Tapas menu in the afternoon which is hugely popular.

Leopard’s Leap

Situated in the stunning Franschhoek Valley this trendy, modern wine farm has a sleek and artfully designed social wine tasting area within the main dining room space. The family friendly restaurant serves a hearty Rotisserie lunch from Wednesday to Sunday. There is a play area located outside, in view of the restaurant tables with large floor to ceiling glass windows and plenty of lawn space for ball games. Click here to read more.

Middlevlei Wine Estate

Middelvlei Wine Estate is run by the Momberg family, inviting you to join them for a traditional South African Boerebraai experience. The farm, with a true rustic South African vibe, is very welcoming to families with plenty of entertainment for kids (and mom and dad!) This is the only farm I know of that offers this truly South African traditional experience on a wine farm in Stellenbosch. While mom and dad relax with a bottle of Middelvlei wine, the kids can have a good time too. The little ones can play in the sandpit, feed the farm animals, enjoy the open space on the kick bikes or braai their own marshmallows. Click here to read more.

Mulderbosch Vineyards

The relaxed, family-friendly Tasting Room at Mulderbosch Vineyards has an outdoor space with wooden decking lined with comfy cushioned seating, beanbags for the lawn, and landscaped areas where you can relax and eat while taking advantage of the views of the vineyards and rolling hills. They serve a selection of thin-based wood-fired pizzas, with a variety of delicious fresh toppings, from their outdoor pizza oven. It is the perfect setting for a relaxed family outing and an afternoon of pizza and wine. There is a large wooden jungle gym for kids and lots of space to run around and grassed hills to roll down. There are two areas for kids, or adults, to play a game of Boules – the French game where you roll heavy metal balls as close as possible to a target (similar to lawn bowls except you are on dirt and not lawn).

Vergenoegd Wine Estate

Vergenoegd Wine Estate is a fantastic family destination in the Stellenbosch Winelands. There is plenty of entertainment for kids and families to keep them busy, it is easy to linger here all day. Vergenoegd believe in good, old fashioned entertainment for the kids. Outdoor games, giant chalk boards, cookie decorating and, of course the Duck Parade, Duck Tour and feeding the ducks. There is a playroom in the Manor House and kiddies are catered for with special care.

Tokara Delicatessen

The Tokara Delicatessen offers a relaxed and child-friendly environment in which to enjoy a delicious breakfast or a light and seasonal lunch. This charming deli has a beautiful setting, located on the Tokara Wine Estate, with scenic views of the Simonsberg Mountains, olive groves and vineyards. The deli has a spacious feel to it with high ceilings and floor to ceiling glass walls with views of the surrounding valley and vineyards. Tables are located inside and outside on the deck all with a view. They serve a selection of wood-fired, thin based gourmet pizza’s, cheese and charcuterie platters, and seasonal meals and have a great kid’s menu. The deli is ideal for kids of all ages with baskets full of toys for the younger little ones to play with inside or on the deck next to your table and for older kids they have a wooden jungle gym, sandpit and space for them to play on the lawn in front of the restaurant, in view of the tables. There is a giant bird’s nest for the good climbers.
