TOKARA Wines
On Monday, 28th of August, guests were treated to an exclusive preview of TOKARA's new vintage release wines.

When producing the Tokara Reserve Wines, origin distinction and cultivar expression are what we strive for in these wines. In doing so, we are able to offer our patrons wines which best represent the Tokara owned estates on which their grapes are grown. Our grapes are hand-picked and handled gently throughout the winemaking process, further demonstrating our commitment to creating world-class South African wines.

Today our Reserve wines represent three very different wine growing regions: from the southern slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, to the cool climate mountainous valley of Elgin.

The Tokara Director's Reserve Red 2013 is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet franc and 5% Malbec. The grapes originated from TOKARA’s premium vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain.

The wine has stunning depth of colour. Displaying intense garnet centre and a ruby rim. The nose is shy at first then opens up to a melange of red and black fruits with hints
of dried herbs, Eucalyptus, cedar wood and graphite. The wine enters the palate with amazing clarity. The flavours are those of dark cherries, raspberries and blackcurrant. There is a hint of herbal spice on the mid-palate which leads to fine, firm tannins on the finish.

The Tokara Director's Reserve White 2015  is a blend of 71% Sauvignon blanc and 29% Semillon. It was made from grapes grown on the highest slopes of Tokara’s Stellenbosch property.

This wine displays an intense deep straw colour. The nose displays stunning complexity with fruit notes of ripe quince, passion fruit and baked apples, there are hints of lemon grass, toasted almonds and freshly baked brioche. The wine enters the palate full and rich reminiscent of the aromas on the noose. The wine finishes with amazing clarity and depth with a slight grip just lingering. This wine drinks exceptionally well now but will continue to develop and improve through till 2025.

Tokara Méthode Cap Classique Blanc de Blanc 2011 is made from 100% Chardonnay from grapes grown on Tokara’s Elgin property, Highlands.

This bubbly has a vibrant light golden hue with a hint of green in the colour. The mousse is exceptionally fine and consistent. The aromas are those of freshly baked brioche, fresh
apples and a hint lemon blossom. The fine bubbles explode in your mouth upon entry. The palate is mouth-filling with flavours of toasted almonds, freshly buttered toast, lemon and
lime preserve with a long finish, which hints of a slightly saline mineral note. This leaves one wanting to take another sip. This wine drinks well now but will benefit from ageing until 2027.

The Tokara Reserve Collection Elgin Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is a blend of 98% Sauvignon blanc and 2% Semillon from grapes grown on Tokara’s Highlands farm in Elgin. Only the best fruit from the best performing blocks on this property are used.

The wine has a stunning vibrant straw colour with tinges of green. The aromas are abundant with pungent notes of fresh guava’s, asparagus, lemon grass and fresh cut grass.
There is an amazing freshness as the wine enters the palate, with fresh citrus, grapefruit flavours leading to a creamy mid-palate and a lingering crisp finish. This wine drinks well now but will benefit from ageing until 2027.

The Tokara Reserve Collection Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2016 is 100% Sauvignon blanc produced from botrytis grapes from Tokara’s Farm Highlands; in the Elgin District.

The wine has a brilliant rich golden hue with a hint of green. The aromas are rich and complex with notes of dried apricot and peach. The barrel fermentation and maturation is evident in the hint of vanilla, toasted brioche and marzipan notes. The palate is full and rich with intense flavours of ginger nut spice, quince jelly and dried fruits. There is even a hint of preserved orange and nutmeg along with toasted almonds. The mid-palate is rich and creamy but not clawing leading to a finish which is clean and fresh.

The Tokara Reserve Collection Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is a blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot and 4% Cabernet franc. The grapes originated from TOKARA’s premium vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain just outside of Stellenbosch.

The wine displays a stunning deep dark plum colour. The aromas are that of fresh red and black berries. There is a hint of fresh mint, cigar box and dark cocoa underlying the
concentrated fruit notes. The entry of the wine onto the palate is full and rich. With deep concentrated fruits such as fresh ripe prunes, blackberries, crème de cassis and mulberries.
The tannins of the wine are robust yet yielding. This all leads to a dry textured finish with a lingering savoury note.
This wine drinks well now but will benefit from ageing until 2024.

The wine displays a brilliant light golden hue. The nose is full of rich creamy notes reminiscent of a bakery in the early morning. These aromas are interlaced with white peach, honeydew melon and citrus blossom, which emanates from the glass. The wine enters the palate with beautiful fresh citrus flavours, which lead to a mid-palate of creamy texture, which then coats the mouth with flavours of fresh bread, toasted almonds and vanilla. This all leads to a clean crisp citrus finish that lingers forever, leaving the palate refreshed.
