Nederburg Auction
A staggering one million rand was raised for this year’s Nederburg Auction charity beneficiary, sp(i)eel. Punters at the 43rd Nederburg Auction were treated to world-class cuisine after the main auction concluded. Before the main course was served guests generously opened their wallets during the Charity Auction, masterfully directed by Roland Peens of Wine Cellar.

sp(i)eel is an arts therapies collective, nonprofit organisation working throughout the greater Cape winelands and delivers some outstanding work for children and adults alike. Marlize Swanepoel, co-founder of sp(i)eel, was almost left speechless when all donated items went under the hammer of Roland Peens for R505,000. Shortly thereafter, Marlize was left completely speechless when Richard Rushton, MD of Distell, committed to equaling the amount raised by donating another R505,000, totaling R1.010m raised. Once Marlize managed to catch her breath again, she did manage to say: “We at sp(i)eel would like to extend a warm and heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported the Nederburg Charity Auction. We are overwhelmed by the response. Your generosity makes our work possible. And because we work with the health and well-being of children, their parents and teachers, it is possible for your contributions to have a lifelong impact on the farming communities in the Winelands.”

During his Keynote Address, Michael Fridjhon challenged the industry to increase their efforts towards alleviating the plight of the communities who work and live around the farms by giving them knowledge to become more active players in the wine value chain. After accepting Michael’s challenge, Distell MD, Richard Rushton said these funds will go a long way towards uplifting the communities in the greater Cape winelands. Dalene Steyn, Auction Manager noted that this is by far the most raised in any year and hopefully sets a new benchmark for future beneficiaries.

Charity Auction, auctioneer, Roland Peens, recently visited some of sp(i)eel’s projects and said: “I am absolutely delighted to be able to contribute back to the industry in this way. Many of the children that are supported by sp(i)eel have broken homes and this incredible team has already made an impact to many of these children’s futures. Hopefully the funds raised will increase the impact of this wonderful initiative. I can’t thank the generous bidders enough for their incredible support of sp(i)eel!”

The Charity Auction is a proud tradition of the annual Nederburg Auction and has raised much-needed funds for various organisations in the greater Cape winelands over the years.
