We are delighted to present the third set of Ultra Value Wine Challenge results. The industry wine competition that assists consumers find the smartest buys for under R100 per bottle. It continues to attract vigorous support, from both existing entrants as well as newcomers, those quality producers and vineyards who feature great-value wines.
General
‘First and foremost, a brilliant set of results awaits wine lovers! The winners list below offers remarkable quality at what could best be called as ‘forgettable’ prices! How fortunate are today’s consumers, to now be able to buy these quality wines with utter conviction?
The enthusiastic industry support for this compelling category based on price, is both terrifically exciting and hugely pleasing too. And why not? Wine drinkers remain dead-keen to carry on enjoying their lifestyles. Price is key, and the Ultra Value Challenge supports this in every way possible. The value sector is on an upward trajectory.
Thus despite obviously tough times, vineyards and consumers both win with the Ultra Value Challenge. Success, and brilliant value-for-money wines, are both contagious qualities!

Quality
‘It has to be said that we were wowed by the quality. 2016/17 vintages have yielded really delicious wines of lip-smacking balance and concentration. Judges commented favourably flight after flight, talking about how quality improvements are so palpable. Clearly, both improved viticulture as well as cellar practices have contributed to this upgrade. Never before have so many wines at this price point shown the pedigree and class generally experienced. What a fabulous statement to be able to make about our wine industry…at its lowest price points! Wine drinkers are in for a treat.’
Judging
‘Overall Challenge chair Ginette De Fleuriot had a credible team of expert judges. Judging panels were tough, but fair. A significant portion of wines simply did not get through that first, arduous, quality hurdle. Then, the algorithm that took price into account in order to arrive at the value-adjusted final result, saw another substantial number of wines fall aside. Victories are deservedly sweet for those wines that cracked an award, as confirmed by the independent Auditors.’
Statistics
‘In line with international competitions and to keep an eye on the reputation and prestige of winning an award, around 75% of entered wines were awarded. Just 8% of wines gained Double Gold Medal awards. 24% gained Gold Medal awards. 44% gained Silver Medal awards. Awards were difficult to achieve. They were hard earned, with the result that these well-made wines fully deserve their accolades.’
Cultivars & blends results review
‘Sauvignon Blanc aced the event, achieving a total of 51 awards of which 7 were for Double Golds. Chenin gained 35 awards with 2 Double Golds. Pinotage, Cabernet, Merlot and Shiraz were the next big contenders, cracking 24 awards and 4 Double Golds (Pinotage), 23 awards with 3 Double Golds (both Cabernet AND Merlot) and 22 awards with 6 Double Golds (Shiraz).
Then, Chardonnay gained 23 awards, Other White Blends gained 11 awards and Other White Cultivars gained 8. White Bordeaux totalled 5 awards with a single Double Gold.
Other Red Blends gained 18 awards with 1 Double Gold. Cape Blends scored 13 awards with 1 Double Gold. Bordeaux Blends won a total of 9 awards with 2 Double Golds. Rhone blends won 7 awards and other red cultivars won 6 awards.
It’s exciting to note that rosé cracked 21 awards, including a Double Gold! Fortified managed 9 awards, Natural Sweets gained 6 awards while Off Dry gained 5. Port managed 2 awards. Then, MCC/bubbly gained a total of 3 awards.’

Koelenhof Wynkelder
Martin Stevens, Koelenhof winemaker: "We are of course extremely pleased with the latest results of the 2017/2018 Ultra Value Wine Challenge. Over the years we have strived to reach for the best quality possible in all our wines and there has been a steady realization of this goal. We are lucky enough to be able to source from many vineyards the different varieties of grapes that we bottle and these results prove that if eleven of a total of fourteen wines entered receive Gold or Silver, then we have reached a great milepost of the combination of sourcing the right grapes from the right terroir as well as the correct vinification methods in the cellar. Apart from the classic varieties winning these awards we are really happy that the less classic varieties like our Gewurztraminer and Sangiovese stood out and made us proud."
Overhex Wines International

Alvi's Drift
Dr Alvi Van der Merwe: "We are ecstatic that our Signature range of wines has been awarded 5 gold medals. Our 2017 Chenin Blanc won gold. The wine was also a winner in 2016, which is a testament to the consistency of this product. Gold awards for our 2017 Viognier and 2017 Sauvignon Blanc are a shot in the arm for the winemaking team which had worked very hard on these styles.
2016 was a great year for red wines in Worcester. This is reflected in the outstanding 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon and 2016 Shiraz which both won gold medals. We have slightly modified our winemaking techniques and general red winemaking philosophy. The result is a range of rich, full flavoured but approachable wines. It is wonderful to see this being recognised by the judging panel."

A wonderful addition was the exceptionally high scores received on our Pandora’s Lock 1855 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon that scored 94/100 and was placed 3rd overall. Namaqua Wines

James Ochse, Winemaker: "We are delighted to have won Double Gold for our Sauvignon Blanc 2017 and Gold for both our Chenin Blanc 2017 and Merlot 2015. Mount Vernon

It’s always an honour to have a panel of judges taste your wine and know that they enjoy it enough to award it with a medal. Our philosophy at Mt Vernon has always been to produce wines that will over-deliver on quality and experience, but at an affordable price. Gerhard Swart, Winemaker: "Flagstone winery is very excited about the Ultra Value Challenge results as these indicate to our customers that the same time and dedication that goes into our premium wines, goes into our lifestyle range.
