Durbanville Hills Cellar
When I think of Durbanville Hills Wines, I think of Sauvignon Blanc. Martin Moore and his winemaking team make the range of Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc and celebrate them. Taking place on 28 and 29 October, Durbanville Hills is once again part of the wine valley’s most anticipated celebrations – the annual Season of Sauvignon.

Providing guests with the chance to Explore Durbanville, the festivities will consist of delectable food, great entertainment, and award-winning wines. Tickets are available to purchase via Webtickets at a cost of only R100 per adult and R50 per child.

Famed for its tropical fruit flavours and freshness on the palate, the Durbanville Hills Sauvignon Blanc and the brand’s recently launched Sauvignon-inspired sparkling wine will be two of the weekend’s wine showstoppers. Guests are encouraged to grab a glass, sit back and relax on the lawns while enjoying the soulful sounds of Paige Mac, a fan favourite at the winery, as well as a performance by The Renegades.

A variety of Cape Town’s best food trucks will be onsite to offer guests everything from burgers to tacos, sandwiches and oysters as well as cheese and Charcuterie platters.

Moms and dads can kick back and relax while sipping on a glass of crisp Sauvignon Blanc while the little ones enjoy the jumping castle, pedal go-carts, sand-art, face painting, magicians, balloon twisting, bow and arrows and lots more. The Rugby Curry Cup final will also be screened inside the tasting area for those die-hard fans.

Martin Moore, Cellar Master at Durbanville Hills, says that along with the team, he looks forward to showcasing Durbanville Hills’ new vintages to guests over the weekend. “We had an exceptional harvest this year and the wines produced truly reflect this. We look forward to welcoming guests back to the winery where they will be able to enjoy all things Sauvignon.”

High scores for Durbanville Hills in Tim Atkin’s fifth annual South Africa Special Report
Renowned British journalist and Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, recently released his fifth annual South Africa Special Report, which recognised the Durbanville Hills Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc 2017 which received an exceptional 90+ points out of a possible 100.

The fact that two of these white varietals came from Durbanville Hills is something that Martin Moore, Cellar Master at Durbanville Hills, sees as an amazing achievement. “We are thrilled about the Rhinofields Sauvignon Blanc 2017 receiving 91 points. While a special word of thanks and congratulations must go to the winemaking team for their meticulous crafting of these outstanding wines, everyone involved at the winery contributed to this success story.”

The grapes were sourced on the lower foothills at the Western side of the valley.

Pour
From a quirky labelled clear glass Champagne shaped bottle. In the flute, a brilliant clear pale straw with lime green flashes.  A delightful combination on the palate of the classical green Sauvignon Blanc aroma and flavours like green bell peppers and star fruit and tropical fruits like star fruit, desiccated pineapple and melon. The vibrant little bubbles lift the wine and make it a real fun drink. Very refreshing.

Pair
This is an excellent aperitif and so good with sea foods, oysters, and Asian treats like sashimi and sushi and South American favourites like Ceviche.

The grapes were sourced from seven of the nine Durbanville Hills member farms.  Three of them have high altitude vineyards growing on the south-eastern slopes of the Hooge Bergs Valley. Cooled by mists and the southeaster, the lower than average temperatures make for slow ripening and intense flavour retention. Some grapes from low lying, south western facing vineyards on Maastricht, Bloemendal, Klein Roosboom and Oatlands were used to enhance the full-bodied character.  Founding Cellarmaster Martin Moore and White Wine Maker Kobus Gerber have produced a stunner.

Pour
From a screw-capped Bordeaux shaped bottle with the elegant diamond shaped Durbanville Hills Livery. A pale straw colour with lime green flashes. The green scrunched fynbos herbaceousness on the nose has sweet tropical limes, granadilla and guava. The medium bodied wine delights from entry with a golden thread of bright fruit acidity running through to the long ending. The palate is a mélange of fruits, sub-tropical and tropical ending in sweet fruit.

Pair
While the wine is a perfect aperitif, it is made for food.  It is good with fish, a pan-fried tranche of SASSI friendly hake with lemon and butter would be a great partner.  It works well with gazpacho soft cheeses, chevin and deep fried battered haloumi.

I have not had the pleasure of tasting this wine, but I have had previous vintages and if you can land a bottle of the 2017, it is a source of great wine happiness.
