Riebeek Cellars, nestled in the picturesque Riebeek Valley, tucked up against the slopes of the majestic Kasteelberg, was crowned as one of the Pinotage Rosé winners at the Pinotage Association’s first competition specifically for Rosé wines made using South Africa’s most successful ‘indigenous’ variety.

All of the country’s major wine-producing areas were represented, with producers competing for the Award of Excellence honouring the top three entries. “We as the winemaking team are very honoured and proud of this award. It is always fantastic to win something, but it makes it so much more worthwhile if we win an award for the first time”, said Eric Saayman, Senior Winemaker.

De Wet Viljoen, vice-chair of the Pinotage Association said that the winning Rosé wines are refreshing and of great quality, reiterating the vision to incorporate and support various styles and market stakeholders. The judges included Jacques Roux (experienced judge and marketing director of DGB), Fred Viljoen and Johan Malan (proprietors and cellarmasters at Viljoensdrift and Simonsig respectively), Susan Erasmus (previously winemaker at Vrede en Lust and now at Laffort SA), Brad Gold (Cape Wine Master and head of marketing at Oak Valley) and Marené de Beer (winemaker at Altydgedacht).

This year the winemaker at Riebeek Cellars identified a specific vineyard for their Rosé and used a special fermenting substance to give this beautiful wine its rosy hue. The fresh fruity flavours in the wine and colour is what sets it apart and gave it the edge as a winner. Eric loves the Riebeek Cellars Pinotage Rosé by itself but also recommends to enjoy it with a stuffed deboned chicken or salmon sashimi.

This intimate close-knit winery on the western coast of the Cape Province celebrates 75 years in the wine industry with their recipe to success being to respect what they have and being passionate and caring in what they do with it. Their team members also plays a big part in this flourishing cellar to produce high quality wines, which makes them the choice of wine buyers internationally. Well-known both in South Africa and abroad, Riebeek Cellars manages a variety of brands for various countries.
