Boschendal wine farm boasts some of the most picturesque views in the Cape Winelands, with dramatic mountain vistas visible from the lush lawns. So, it’s no surprise that the estate has become a popular picnic spot, as families and friends come together for a day out.

Boschendal recently launched two new picnic lunches that offer guests distinctly different experiences. But there is one similarity – the food. Only naturally grown produce from the estate, as well as locally made artisanal goods, are used, ensuring guests receive a basket filled with delicious, healthy and wholesome food.

The seasonal picnic menus do change depending on what the food garden is producing.

The two picnic areas, are 1km apart, namely the Rhone Rose Garden Picnics and Werf Farm Picnics, so be sure to remember which one you booked for.

The classic Boschendal picnic has relocated to the Rhone lawns - this is in the wine-making and wine-tasting hub of Boschendal.

The picnic area has spectacular mountain views and is surrounded by the exhibition vineyards, the Rhone Homestead, the Cellar Door and the Boschendal Winery.

Picnic baskets can be enjoyed at carefully-laid out tables or on a picnic blanket under the shade of the oak trees. This is a full-service area.

Rhone Rose Garden picnic baskets include food made from Boschendal’s natural farm produce including delicate pates, freshly baked bread, three delicious salads, pasture raised meat, a selection of cold meats, homemade whole grain mustard mayo, artisan cheeses and one of Boschendal’s celebrated desserts.

Under the trees of the Pavilion lawn, close to the iconic Boschendal Manor House, is where you’ll find this picnic spot, next to the main werf and the farm-to-table food hub.

It’s a more relaxed affair, with hammocks, bean bags and loads of space to spread out a blanket. Boschendal suggests that guests to bring their own blankets, chairs and tables and enjoy a leisurely afternoon under the trees with family and friends. There’s a jungle gym and acres of garden for the kids to romp around in. This is a partial service area.

In the Boschendal Werf basket you’ll find wholesome farm produce and artisanal goodies courtesy of Boschendal’s bakers, butchers and chefs. Expect pates, fresh baguettes, a seasonal salad from the food garden, a selection of cold meats, cheese and homemade preserves and one of Boschendal’s celebrated desserts.
