Working at a winery may have more perks than just the tastings. TOKARA, one of the country’s top wine producers has recently switched from petroleum fuels to using biodiesel in all vehicles (including its tractors, digger loaders and bakkies) according to Aidan Morton, Tokara’s Viticulturist .

“I drive a Toyota doublecab bakkie and average about 4000km per month between our vineyards in Stellenbosch, Elgin and Hermanus,” said Aidan. “I don’t feel bad about my high mileage anymore using biodiesel in my new car because I’m doing so much better for the environment.” First Rand Group Chairman and owner of Tokara GT Ferreira, fully supports the decision to run the Tokara fleet on biodiesel.  Aidan feels that the Cape Wine Industry as a whole should take the initiative in using the cleaner fuel to operate their businesses, especially now with so much focus on the industry’s Biodiversity initiatives.

Tokara is one of a growing number of businesses from across the country that has turned to environmentally friendly biodiesel to help reduce emissions and lessen their environmental impact.

“We believe Tokara is the first winery to convert its entire fleet and all of its farms to biodiesel.  Businesses like Tokara illustrate how far biodiesel has come in the last year,” said Biodiesel One South Africa Managing Director Terry Booysen. “Biodiesel is making true inroads in the private sector. More companies are turning to environmentally friendly biodiesel to help reduce emissions and lessen their environmental impact.”

Biodiesel is a renewable diesel fuel that is made from domestic resources such as soybean oil or other domestic fats and vegetable oils. It can be used in any diesel engine with few or no modifications, and can be blended with petroleum diesel at any level. Biodiesel significantly cuts harmful environmental emissions, promotes greater energy independence and boosts our economy.
